Full luscious lips are in demand. Some women are lucky enough to be born with them but most need some help. Lip augmentation can be accomplished in different ways.

Dermal Fillers

These are injectable substances that can be placed in the office. Substances such as JUVÉDERM® and RESTYLANE® are made of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is found in human skin cells. These are products designed to enhance one’s appearance without any incisions or downtime. Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® smooth wrinkles and sculpt lips. Additionally, it can be used for chin, cheek, as well as other facial areas. Lip augmentation treatment with these products can last anywhere from four to six months, depending on the patient. Dermal fillers are also called injectables.

Alloderm is a very popular material for lip augmentation. It is a natural collagen dermal sheet harvested from cadavers and is screened and highly processed. The standards by which it is processed are very strict. The material is inserted through tiny incisions made in the inside corners of the mouth. Stitches are used to close the incisions. AlloDerm eventually becomes integrated with the natural tissues of the body. The material can be absorbed, so size of the lips may decrease with time.

Fat injections: Fat can also be injected into the lip. The fat is harvested (liposuction) from another area of the body (often the abdomen or thighs) and is purified before it is injected into the lips. As with Alloderm some of the fat is absorbed and lasting results can vary. The average is that about 50% absorbs over the first 6 months.

Patient’s Own Tissue

When skin is being excised such as in a tummy tuck, breast lift or facelift, the dermal component of the skin can be used for lip augmentation. It is placed in a similar manner to Alloderm but it’s your own tissue. If you have a scar from a c-section or hernia surgery, the scar can be excised and the dermal portion used for lip augmentation. Using your own tissue decreases the amount that is absorbed and volume is maintained.

It is much easier to illustrate these procedures in person. Call us for a consultation today.
