Breast implants create contour, shape and proportion to the female figure. Size change in breast implants occurs either in projection or width. The placement of breast implants to enhance body shape is called Breast Augmentation.
There are two basic types of breast implants: Silicone gel implants or saline salt water implants. Both types of breast implant have a rubbery silicone shell and come in a variety of sizes. Size change in breast implants occurs either in projection or width.
Projection or the amount the implant pushes your breast forward. Breast implants are Low profile (standard), Moderate profile (medium) or High profile (most projected). There are only three companies in the United States that produce breast implants, Mentor, Natrelle and Sientra. Dr. Wilson uses implant from all three companies in the Scottsdale and Mesa offices. Their products are of highest quality and they provide lifetime warranties. The products vary in names ( Mentor names its gel implants “MemoryGel” and Natrelle names its “CohesiveGel”, Sientra claims it coined the term “Gummie Bear”). Each brand has different dimensions, changing in both width and projection. There are round and shaped or anatomical implants. During your personal consultation the shape and size will be decided based on your desired result and your body frame. Width increases as implants get larger. Dr. Wilson is happy to offer all his patients in Gilbert breast implant consultations.
One of the major manufacturers of breast implants in the US, Natrelle, are changing their breast implants. The new implants are called Inspira. They will take the place of the classic implants models styles 15 and 20. Inspira implants are filled a little fuller so the shell will wrinkle less.
As always there are different sizes and styles that vary in fullness and shape. There are different profiles Medium, Full and Xtra Full. Profile refers to how the implants project forward once they are placed or how round they are as they sit on the table. They are gummy bear implants, which mean the gel inside the silicone shell is more cohesive or thicker. Not all gummies are the same. There are now gummy, gummier and gummiest implants. This may sound confusing, but what it really means is that there are different thicknesses of the gel inside the implant.
Inspira is the same original gummy silicone that has been used for years. It is the softest gel and teardrops more when a round implant is used. This is the softest feel out of the three.
Inspira SoftTouch is a little more cohesive or thick. It is a little firmer than the Inspira. The stiffer gel makes it teardrop less, but it will have less wrinkling in a patient with smaller breast volume or thinner tissues
Inspira Cohesive is the most cohesive or thickest gel. It was first developed for breast reconstruction. It teardrops very little and is firmer to the touch. It holds its volume high and creates significant fullness in the upper part of the breast. Tear dropped shaped implants are created from this thicker gel because it holds it shape so well.
Over the past two decades there has been controversy over breast implant safety. It has been reported that breast implants both saline and silicone have created multiple problems in the health of patients who have had breast implants placed.
The use of silicone gel implants was restricted for many years until enough scientific evidence could be studied. Silicone gel implants returned to full status in November of 2006 and now are used more often than Saline implants. The gel inside the silicone gel implant is thicker or more cohesive and acts more as a solid than a liquid. They can be cut in half and the gel stay in place and not leak into tissues.
